This page is dedicated to the memory of Edna Carolina Funk. Her first marriage was to Seth Moses in 1879. They had one child named Lilie Mae Moses b 6 March 1880, d who married Alexander Redon on 31 January 1903, died on 12 August 1975. Lena's second marriage was to William Latimore Lea and is in our line. - WILLIAM L LEA (g-g) Edna Carolina Funk (g-m) --------------- ---------------------- b 8-30-1855 Port Vincent,La /b 9-12- 1861 Liberty, Ms m 1891 in Amite Cty, Ms d 10-14-1902 gunshot,Kentwood La / d 3-7-1930 (N. Thus, she must have used the name of Lena rather than Edna. Funk's background. Her death certificate in Orleans Parish, La lists her father as Henry Funk. The death certificate showed that Lena was residing at 4800 Canal St, New Orleans at the time of her death on March 7, 1930. She died of cerebral hemorrhage, hypertension and "auricular fibbrilulation". It further stated that the "deceased was the wido of Wm L Lea and the daughter of Henry Funk." Her name in this document was listed as Lena Caroline Lea. I found a ship record of a Henry Funk arriving from Germany to Philadelphia in 1847. Although I don't know that this is Lena's father, it was the only Henry Funk listed and is a good possibility for checking out. It is listed in United States: Index to records of Aliens' Declarations vol 1-11, A to Z and on page 169. I still need to check Pa and other census records for 1850 and 1860 to learn more about this family. ===================================================================== I have received two sources of information that indicate that our "Lena" comes from one line or another. Both appear to be right on target but I am not in a position to verify either one. It is my guess that the two sets of data are really only one and that the correct one is based on the data in Data Set I. If that is the case, there is still some confusion with the names. However, the first set of data listed below provides memories of Lena Funk who was married to Bill Lea, which is indicative of a connection. The second set of data knew of Lena Caroline Funk with a b-date of 9-12-1861 which is indicative of a connection, since that is the correct b-date for our Lena Funk. Both data sets show a Henry Funk as the father which was confirmed on Lena's death certificate in New Orleans. However, one was born in 1823 and married Eva Nick whereas the other was born in 1842 and married Ada Grover. Both sets of parents could have, conceivably, been our Lena's parents. There is also a good possibility that both sets of Henry's listed below are related or that the first one is even the son of the earlier one. The listed wife of the earlier one was born in 1832 and the second Henry was born in 1842 so there would be a conflict of age for the mother. However, the earlier Henry could have been married prior to marrying Eva Nick and that wife could have died. ===================================================================== Data Set I =========== In contrast and as a contradiction of the above family of our Lena Funk, I received a call and faxed information from E S Watts of Kentwood who said that her grandmother was Annie Funk and that she was the sister of the Lena Funk who married to Bill Lea. This knowledge of the relationship to Bill Lea indicates this is closer to our line than the previous data. This data shows that George Henry Funk (1823-1899), born Germany, married Eva Nick (1832-1905) born Alsace Lorraine. They are buried at Osyka Cemetery, Osyka, Ms. Although we don't have a complete listing of children, the data indicates that one daughter was Annie Margaret Funk (1-4-1864 to June 1906) who married James Emanuel Smith, Jr (9-02-1856 to 7/11/1931). They had the following children: Joseph D Smith 4-30-1883 1-11-1944 August Henry Smith 11-1885 12-19-1950 James Emanuel Smith III 4-1-1888 6-6-1948 Eva Elizabeth SMith 9-15-1990 7-1-1956 Lillian Annie Smith 6-10-1898 11-23-1984 Nell smith 2-13-1900 7-1-1991 James Emanuel Smith III is the father of E S Watts. Mrs Watts further stated: "Annie Funk Smith was a younger sister of Lena Funk that was married to Bill Lea. I remember my aunts talking about Aunt Lena and I met Mable and Ester (Lena's daughters). I also remember Brother Lea. I am not sure about how many other siblings there were, As my aunts were up in age when I was born. I do now that my grandmother Funk lived in the house with my grandmother Annie after her husband died. According to the 1880 census, my Grandfather, James E Smith was 23 years of age and living with his mother in Ward One of Tangipahoa Parish near the Mississippi line by Osyka, Ms. He and Annie Funk evidently married shortly thereafter because my Uncle Joe Smith was born in 1883. My Great Grandmother Funk and my grandmother died within a year of each other." In our visit to McComb, Kim and I found a book of Gone But Not Forgotten with an excerpt on page 41 from the McComb City Enterprise as follows: Feb 9, 1905 Died suddenly last Saturday at Liberty, Miss. Eva Funk age 73. I have computed that Feb 9, 1905 was a Thursday so the reference to her death would indicate that death was on Sat, Feb 4, 1905. Another reference indicated there was a George H Funk, Jr was a marshall in 1877 in Osyka. =================================================================== Data Set II ========== In 2001, I got the following data on the descendants of Henry Funk from my daughter who had received it from Ralph Martin. Ralph Martin's records show that Henry Funk was born abt 1842. He married Ada Schlee Grover about 1862 in Miss. She was born abt 1843. Ralph descends from Isabelle Funk and E F Lloyd as is shown below. Henry and Ada's children were listed by Ralph as being: John Funk, b July 11, 1857, Miss ------> Lena Caroline Funk, b Sept 12, 1861 (our line--see Lea pages) Isabelle Funk b Nov 8, 1863, Miss, m Early Frances Lloyd abt 1880. Lloyd was born Mar 25, 1853 and died Oct 19, 1932 Lloyd came from Ireland. All of the children listed below were born in Linn Cty, Ks Andrew lloyd, b 6-29-1881, d 11-02-1882 Linn Cty, Ks Adabelle Lloyd, b 2-09-1883, d 8-22-1893, Linn Cty, Ks Clarence Lloyd, b 5-11-1885, John Grover Lloyd, b 1-19-1887 d 5-6-1953 Emmet Preston Lloyd, b 12-23-1890, d 7-21-1973 Early Frances Lloyd II, b 3-30-1892, d 3-10-1893 Wm Bartlett Lloyd, b 4-3-1896, Alcie Sclee Lloyd, b 5-14-1898, Leslie Bryan Lloyd, b 6-27-1902, d 5-31-1964 Also, Ralph Martin is a Funk descendant from the above Lloyd descendants and is the grandson of Emmet Preston Lloyd: nitram@redrivernet.com =================================================================== The 1860 census for Amite County Ms shows the following: July 21 & 27 1860-G H Barney LN HN FN Lst name 1st name Age sex Race occup 20 766 766 Funk George 36 M W Tailor Bavaria 21 766 766 Funk Nick 28 F W France 22 766 766 Funk George 9 M W LA 23 766 766 Funk William 4 M W LA 24 766 766 Funk John 2 M W LA In this listing, the Husband could easily have been "George Henry" and the listing of the first name of the wife fits into the maiden name listed above of Eva Nick Funk. The child, John, would have been born a couple of years prior to 1860 and this would fit in with the data below of his census record in 1900 and the cemetery record at Kentwood. This record also would fit into the birth of Edna (Lena) Funk having been born into this family in Sept 1861. =================================================================== In addition to the above data supplied by Ralph, Kim and I found data on the above John Funk at the cemetery in Kentwood as listed below. This data ties in to both of the data sets above and ties into the 1860 census above for George and Nick Funk Double Stone: John G Funk 1857-1911 and Mary J 1864-1905 Next to them is a stone that reads: Daisy M Funk, wife of henry Stone and Charles A Kent, Sr 1884-1964 The 1900 census listed the above John Funk in Tangipahoa Parish, First Ward, Kentwood, SD B, ED 7, Enumerated on June 8th, 1900 by Thompson as follows: Avenue C, Household #135 Name Relation b-day age self dad mom Funk, John Head WM Ap 1855 45 marr 16 yrs Ms Ms Ms Mary Wife WF Jul1856 43 marr 16 yrs La Ms la (had 5 children, 3 still living) Daisy M Daugh WF Mar1885 15 single La Ms La Guy Son WM Dec1895 4 single La Ms La Eugene Son WM Jul1898 2 single La Ms La =================================================================== There were other Funk families living in Miss or La in the census records.
