This page is dedicated to Nancy Jeter Hardy GAITHER, the mother of Whitmill H Hardy. I have an interest in the family of Whitmill H and Julia Hardy who lived in Clay County, Ala from about 1850 to the late 1880's. My interest is that their daughter, Nancy Hardy, married Thomas Florence Owen which has turned out to be my ggf and ggm. Nancy Jeter's first marriage was to Jesse Hardy. Their children were Whitmill and Dicey. Jesse was 52 years older than Nancy when they married and he died within a few years of their marriage. After his death, Nancy married Shadrack Gaither and they had some children of their own. Jesse and Nancy's data is as follows: JESSE HARDY NANCY JETER ------------------ -------------------- b 1744 Bertie Co NC b 29 Feb 1796 m 1920 GA d 1826 in Lincoln County Ga d 24 March 1881, Clay Cty Ala Nancy is buried next to Whitmill Hardy at Lineville, Clay Cty, Ala. ---children--- ---> Whitmill H Hardy Dicey Hardy WILLIAM H HARDY (gg g-f) JULIA A L BARFIELD (gg g-m) -------------------- ---------------------- b Dec 22-1827 GA /b 12-26-1827 GA m d 8-30-1906 /d 6- -1884 both are buried Old City Cemetary, Lineville, Ala After Jesse Hardy's death, Nancy Jeter Hardy married Shadrack Gaither. The background on Shadrack and the descendant data of Shadrack and Nancy is as follows: VACHEL GAITHER DIANNAH (DINAH) HYATT -------------------- ---------------------- b c. 1751 Washington Cty, Md b m 1780 d c. 1825 Lincoln Co, Ga (Farmer) d before Jan 14, 1834, Lincoln Co, Ga (Note: Dinah's parents were Shadrack Hyatt and Dinah Gaither) ---Children--- Carey Gaither m. However, I believe this is an error of the scribe who wrote out the license. The bride immediately before their marriage was a Willingham and the JP who performed the service was a Willingham. Since I have been able to trace Nancy through each subsequent census and have tied her into the children that she and Shadrack had and on to her cemetery plot naming her as Nancy Gaither, I don't think there is any doubt that the entry of "Willingham" was erroneous. In addition to the above error of the name, there may have been an error in the date of the marriage stated to be in Sept 1826. The marriage record above that one was in 1827 which may indicate that Nancy's marriage was after that one. Also, Jesse Hardy did not die until 1827 which would not have left a conflict for the remarriage. Jesse's will was dated January 1827. The scribe who wrote the marriage license noted that he entered the data on the 3rs of Sept 1828. It could be that his memory or his notes of what he was to write had failed him resulting in the error in the name and date. Census Records Show: 1830 Census for Campbell Cty, Ga, p 195, shows: Shadrack Gaither Males 0-5 2 (prob includes Whimill) 30-40 1 Females 0-5 1 (prob includes Dicey) 20-30 2 total 5 1840 Census for Campbell Cty, Ga, 736th Dist, page 025 shows both Shadrack and Meshack as follows: P 23 Meshack Gaither Males 30-50 1 Females 20-30 1 p 25 Shadrack Gaither Males 0-5 1 5-10 2 15-20 2 40-50 1 Females 0-5 1 5-10 1 15-20 1 40-50 1 A probate file was opened in Talladega County, Ala for Shadrack Gaither in Oct, 1858 naming his children as listed above. However, since the 1850 census, below, does not show him in the household, I assume that he died in Randolph County prior to the 1850 census and there was a delay of a number of years before his probate was opened. However, I do have additional data if anyone wants to review it.For a continuation of data on Julia A L Hardy, try The Hardy Lineage
