This page is devoted to the history of the family of Mary Ann McKenzie Odom. Mary Ann was married to William Auston Odom and their children as listed herein. The lineage is as follows: ALEXANDER McKENZIE (my gggg g-f) MARY RODGERS LEWIS (my gggg g-m) ------------------- ----------------------- b m m d d ---Children--- ---> Daniel David I have a FTM/Gedcom of Alexander's descendants dated in 1997 for anyone that is interested. Mary Rodgers was formerly married to Josiah Lewis who is in my wife's lineage, although her lineage is based on the first wife and not on Mary Rogers. It appears that David and Daniel settled in what is now Walthall County, Ms a couple of miles South of Oral Baptist Church, SW of Dexter community and SE of New Zion Bapt Church. The McKenzie brothers were charter members of Union Bapt Church, 1 mile North of Tylertown. It is said that there were 4 McKenzie cemeteries near the original homeplace south of Oral Baptist Church. I received an e-mail in March 2003 from gwendamckenzie@aol.com who said he was a descendant of David McKenzie through his son Azeral Mckenzie. He said that Azeral (A.Z., Azerial or Zearl) is buried in the Hurricane Creek Cem south of Colombia, Ms. His tombstore shows he was born 20 Apr 1807 and died 20 Mar 1890 which would put him at the age of 83. A separate stone states that he and his wife came from SC in 1867. My contact's grandfather, and son of Azeral, was Liberty Warren Mckenzie married to Laura Ball McKenzie. Since the descendants of David McKenize are not in my direct line, I will now get back to my line from Daniel McKenzie. Pike County Ms is the first county in Miss when leaving Tangipahoa Parish, La, going north. Daniel and Sarah settle about 7 miles north of Franklin, La at the mouth of Magee's Creek and the Bogchita river. In 1828, they moved about 20 miles north, just inside old Marion County, where Daniel later died. Sarah's parents were Joseph Benjamin Lewis and Elizabeth Lewis Magee. McKENZIE born 1857 The above descendant info of Josph Martin McKenzie (b 1853) was provided to me in Dec 2002 by James (Jim) W McKenzie III, Evans, Ga (Franjim@knology.net) William McKenzie was born on Aug 31, 1817 and died Nov 7, 1905. Casander Tullos was born on Dec 6, 1820 and died March 12, 1880. They are both buried at Pleasant Grove cemetery just south of Choudrant, La along with other family members. It is said that Cassie Tullos came from England with an uncle when she was 9 years old. See separate Tullos page for more accurate data. The above data was prepared in the past by Fannie Roseanna Gray and supplemented by me from other sources. In the church records of Magee's Creek Baptist Church in Pike County, Ms, there is a record that William McKenzie married Cassander Tullous on Oct 21, 1838. Also shown in the church records in 1838 is that an R.R. Tullous was received into the membership of the church. In Jan, 1839, the church chose Silas Tulluous as moderator. I do not yet know who Cassander's family was. However, see my separate file www.meocpa.com/tullos.html for additional research I have done into that line. Although the 1900 census may not be accurate, it shows slightly different facts than above. In 1900, Mary was age 57 and living in Catahoula Parish with her son, Charley Odom. It states that Mary was born in Miss and that both of her parents were also born in Miss. After Cassie died in 1880, Wm McKenzie married Naricissus Mahuldah Lewis Bagwell McKenzie on May 19, 1880. Her dob was 8-10-1837 Ga and dod was 3-1-1930 Choudrant, La. She is buried at Downsville, la with her first husband, Andrew Jackson Bagwell. She had 6 children with Bagwell.Christie Stewart (stewart5@airmail.net) reported to me in Oct 1997 that she had some children by Wm McKenzie but we have no records of them. Her parents were Samuel Lewis dob 1813 Ga dob 11-10-1892 La and Harriet E ? D dob 7-4-1812 Ga dod 2-26-1892 La. The above references to some of Jackson Parish became parts of Lincoln Parish when it was created in 1873. I did not find William McKenzie in the 1880 census. His wife, Cassie, died in March 1880. I did find his son in Lincoln Parish as follows: George McKenzie 30 La Bell 23 La Minnie 8 La Alva 6 La -?- 3/12 La WILLIAM AUSTON ODOM MARY JANE MCKENZIE ----------------------------------- --------------------------- b 10-4-1832- Lauderdale, Ms /b 7-19-1842 m 5-2-1858 d 8-21-1881 (1887) Lincoln Par, La / d 1916 ---Children--- John Thomas Odom 1859 ------------>>> Maggie Odom 1955 Charley Odom Jesse Martin Odom 1874 (buried at Ebenezer, La) George Curtis Odom b ca 1876 Mattie C Odom b ca 1878 William F. Odom 1881 It is said that Wm Auston Odom worked as an overseer for P.O.Mason at White Sulpher River from early 1860 to 1862, then he joined the 28th Regiment, Company G. He later traded places with another soldier in Company I. He arrived home from the Civil War on May 2, 1864. It is said that his grave is located at the foot of the grave of Margret A. McKenzie at the New Hope Church in Lincoln Parish. This site is north of Choudrant. However, there is no marker for his grave and I cannot verify that he is there. Mary Jane McKenzie was said to be Scottish and Irish. She was less than 16 years old when she married. It is said that she died of pneumonia in 1916. I don't know where she is buried but the census for 1900 ED 7 sheet 23 line 42 has her living with her son Charles J in Catahoula Parish. She could be buried there. She also shows up in the 1910 census living with Wm Sirus Avery. For more information on the ODOM line, see my separate page for that family line. James R McKenzie, Jr, 4365 Wedgworth Ct, Ft Worth, Texas ph 817-292-6220 (jrmckenz@flash.net) provided the data for Wm L McKenzie's siblings and ancestors.
