SEALY in SC-Tenn-La in 1800's

My G g-m was Synthia Sealy who married Thomas (Couey) Colvin in 1856. She
was born in Tenn in 1836 and died in 1916 in Louisiana. She is buried at
the Unionville cemetery north of Ruston, La.

Bill Sealy (FrankLRite@aol.com) has provided me with a Sealy family tree

The following are some excerpts from the Revolutionary service record of
Samuel Sealy as received by Kim Owen Chance from the National Archies and
Records Administration, Aug 1999:

	Service:	South Carolina
	Name: Sealy, Samuel / Sarah
	Number: R9362

On Nov 2, 1843, Sarah Sealy applied for a pension in Talbot County, Ga
as follows:

	State of Georgia
On this the second day of November AD Eighteen Hundred and
Forty-three, personally appeared before me Garrett Sealy, a
Justice of the Peace in and for said State, County of Talbot,
Sarah Sealy, a resident of said State and county, aged Eighty
years who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on her
oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the
benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress Passed
	on the Fourth of July AD Eighteen Hundred and Thirty-Six;

That she is the widow of one certain Samuel Sealy who was formerly
a Private Soldier in the army of the United States of America
of and during the war of the Revolution between England and the
	said United States;
That in the year Seventeen Hundred and Seventy-Eight and from
that time continued to serve in the same in the following manner:
He entered the army as above stated and in my recollection does
not deceive me - he was first mustered into Service under General
Winn and Colonel Lacey. He never was afterwards never at home except
on leave till the month of December Seventeen Eighty-three when he
	was discharged;
That he served while in said army under the following officers that
she recollects: General Sumpter, General Winn, Colonel Taylor,
	Major Perison, Major bond, Captain Frost and Lieutenant Harwicke;
	That he was in no particular battle that she can now recollect;
	He served and marched principally in South Carolina;
That he joined the army first at Winnesbo?? in said State and
was with the army at Charleston, S.C.
Declarant has not at this time any documentary evidence of her
husband's service having lost his discharge which was formerly in
	her possession.
She recollects that Major Bond was the first captain of her husband
	and was afterwards promoted.
Said Sarah further declared that she was united in marriage to the
said Samuel Sealy on the Twentieth day of May AD, Seventeen Hundred
and Seventy-seven adn that her said husband was after that time in
	the army as above declared.
That the said Samuel died in the State of South Carolina on the sixth
day of September in the year Eighteen hundred and Twenty-seven and
that she has remained a widow ever since as will more fully appear
by reference to the proof hereunto annexed.

	State of Georgia
	Talbot County
I, Garret Sealy, a Justice of the Peace in said county and state, do
hereby certify that Sarah Sealy whose name appeared subscribed to the
foregoing declaration did make the same before me on this day after
being duly sworn according to law. That she is reputed and believed and
by many in this county known to be the widow of one certain Samuel
	Sealy, Late a soldier in the war of the Revolution;
That her character for veracity and truth is umimpeached and her
	declaration entitled to credit.
I further certify that said Sarah is from bodyly (sic) infirmity unable
	to attend court.
Given under my hyand the day and date above written.
	Garret Sealy, J.P.

At some time between the above document dated Nov 2, 1843 and July 7, 1853,
Sarah Sealy died. Also, Garret Sealy moved from Talbot Cty, Ga to Tuscaloosa
Cty, Alabama. The following document attests to that fact.

Know all men by these presents, that I Garret Sealy of the County of
Tuscaloosa and State of Alabama, one of the heirs of Samuel Sealy,
deceased, have constituted and appointed and by these presents do
constitute and appoint S.J. Bowen of the city of Washington, my
true and lawful agent and attorney, to prosecute the claim of Sarah
Sealy, deceased; said claim having been filed many years ago by G.L.
Stillwell of Talberton in the Satate of Georgia for a pension for
said Sarah Sealy on account of her husband's services in the
Revolutionary War, which claim was suspended, and I, Garret Sealy,
a son of Samuel and Sarah Sealy, desire to renew; and I hereby
authorize my said Agent to examine all papers and documents in
relation to said claim on file in the Departments at Washinton City
or elsewhere; to file additioanl evidence and to receive the certifcate
	which may be issued for said claim; to have power of substitution;
and to do anything I might do were I personally present. Hereby
ratifying all that my said Attorney may do were I personally present.
hereby ratifying all that my said Attorney may do in the premises and
	revoking all former powers.
Witness my hand and seal this seventh day of July A.D. 1853.
	Garret Sealy

Bill Sealy (FrankLRite@aol.com) provided me with the following information
in March, 1999.

Enoch Sealy really had 2 families, which added to the difficulty
of tracing him. When his first wife died, he remarried Hester
Estes, sold his farm, and moved to Tennessee. He left his son
Obadiah and daugher Jane in South Carolina to be raised by
grandparents, Eli and Rhoda Price Colvin Cornwell. Enoch's father,
William, had also moved to Maury County, Tn. Maury County was later
divided into several other counties, so information on these families
is often in adjacent counties. There was, at this time, a large
migration from Chester County, SC to Maury County, Tn. Many from
the Estes family made the migration, as well as some of Enoch's
cousins. Much of my inforamtion has come from the Estes Cemetery
	in Maury County.

Obadiah Sealy seems to have traveled back and forth between Tenn
and South Carolina. When Obadiah's grandparents (the ones that
raised him) died, he inherited their property. This made him
fairly wealthy. He and his wife then moved to Louisiana, but not
before visiting his father in Tennesse. It was at this time that his
half-sister, Cynthia, decided to move to Louisana with Obadiah and
his wife. Cynthia met Couey Colvin in Vienna, La and they married.

SEALY CEMETERY, VIENNA, LA
There is a Sealy Cemetery in Lincoln Parish, La about 2 miles north of
Vienna on Hwy 167 and about 1/4 mile into the woods. I don't know if it
can actually be found and located anymore. The cemetery includes the
following:

	Sealy, Eli Cornwell 30 Dec 1844	18 Jul 1858
	Sealy, Obadian Eli 24 Nov 1852 28 May 1856
all other graves are unmarked:
Malone, Eugenia Florantha Sealy	18 Aug 1827	8 jan 1887
	Sealy, James Herbet 1881 4 Sep 1883
Sealy, James Robinson Graves	1 Nov 1859	22 Oct 1883
Sealy, Julia Ann Melvinia	25 Feb 1866	28 Jun 1883
	Sealy, Lambert Davis

	Sealy, Lillian Grey 7 Jul 1870	29 Jun 1873

Hester L Estes was the daughter of John Henry Estes, Sr and Martha Jane
Jaggers (b Jan 5, 1782, d July 11, 1849). John and Martha were married
in about 1804 in Chester County, SC. Whe was the daughter of Daniel
Jaggers and Hester ??. Many people have her listed as a Hitchcock, however
she is only metioned as Hester in the will and we don't know where the
surname of her father or mother. Martha has been referred to as "Marthy"
in a census report. (the data in this paragraph was supplied by Doyle
Sanders, Tulsa, Ok gunnyd@swbell.net)

Enoch J Sealy and his first wife, Nancy Jane Cornwall, had a son, Obediah
Sealy who was born in about 1822. Obediah Sealy, at age 38 is shown
in the 1860 census, born in SC and living in Jackson Parish, La at the
Vienna Post Office--same location that Synthia would have been. Cynthia was
age 22 at that time and also living in Jackson Parish at the Vienna Post
Office. Obediah's census data for 1860 shows:

	Obediah Sealy	38	SC	Farmer	35,000	5,000
	Jane HW 30	SC
	Levi D 14	SC
	Narcissa C	12	SC
	Sarah A.C.	10	SC
	Robert C	5	SC
	Eliza F 3	La
	James R P 10/12	La

This Obediah was referenced in an e-mail from Bill Sealy (FrankLRite@aol.com)
in Nov 1997 when he stated:

"John Colvin and Hannah Price had a daughter, Rhoda. She would
be the brother of your ancestor, Daniel Colvin. Rhoda's full
name was Rhoda Price Colvin, born 1771. She married Eli
Cornwell (you have it misspelled), born Dec 5, 1821. Their
Daughter, Nancy Jane Cornwell, married Enoch Jaggers Sealy,
in 1821. Their son was Obadiah Eli Sealy (this is the Sealy
that you have 1860 census infor on from Jackson Parish, La)
born in 1822. All of these families previously lived in
Chester Co., SC. Obadiah was the first Sealy in Louisiana,
and he is my gg g-f."

"The connection to your granmother, Synthia Sealy, is as of
yet, unknown. You said she was born in Tn. We known that
Obadiah's parents moved to Tn with his older siblings, leaving
Obadiah in SC to be raised by his grandparents. Obadiah
married in 1844, and later mvoed his family to Vienna, La.
We believe that he visited his parents and family n Tn (who
he had not seen since he was a child) on his way to La.
Synthia Sealy may be part of, or a descendant of, Obahidah's
family. You said that she was born in 1836, making her 14 years
younger than Obahiah. Perhaps she was a younger cousin, or
even sister of Obahidah's, who visited him in La where she met
Thomas Colvin. These two faimilies must have been communicating
with each other over the years. Obadiah Sealy moved to the same
town in Louisiana as Daniel Colvin at least 37 years after
Daniel Colvin moved there. It's too much of a coincidence."

In addition to the Enoch Jagger (E J) Sealy listed above, there was also
a marriage between an E J Sealy and Hester L Estes (b 1806 SC, d 1852 place
unknown) She is buried in Estes Cem, Maury Co, Tn. source Gary Rainey
grainey@dialnet.net who quoted this datafrom They Passed this Way, Page A-91
& Maury County Cem Records, page 573, Maury Cty Lib, Columbia, Tn.
