My connection to the Lewis family is that Sarah Lewis married Daniel McKenzie who is in my line. After about 4 years they moved to "Pee Dee River Country" in South Carolina. there his son, William, married Sarah Burton, daughter of Thomas and Mary Burton. william and Sarah had two sons: Joseph Burton Lewis and Fracis Lewis. Francis died at age 15. It is said that Thomas was such a great influence in America that the commander of Savannah, Ga offered a reward of 1,000 guinas for his head. JOSEPH BENJAMINE (Burton) LEWIS SARAH ELIZABETH MAGEE ---------------------- ------------------- b Sept 30, 1763, SC b Oct 15, 1796 m abt Oct 15, 1780 d March 24, 1845 buied at Pine Bluff d Sept 10, 1828, Copiah, Ms Bapt Ch, Dentville, Ms His second wife was Tabitha Morris Joseph Benjamin Lewis fought with General Francis Marion in the revolution in his youth. In 1786, he married Elizabeth Magee and moved to Williamsbury Distirck along the Black River and was overseer on an indigo plantation. After having the first 4 children, he moved to Screven County, Ga, part of which beame Bullock County. Land records show he owned land there from 1793 to 1811. Elizabeth's father was William Magee who moved from SC to Pensacola, Fla but was killed by indians when he attempted to return to SC. Their children were: James McKenzie Susanna McKenzie Eliza McKenzie Alexander McKenzie ----> William McKenzie John McKenzie Elizabeth McKenzie Ann McKenzie Emily McKenzie John McKenzie Martha McKenzie (died at about 25 yrs of age) Note re: William Lewis: He was the father of several children at Lewiston, La (just East of Kentwood in Tangipahoa, Parish), one of whom was Henry W L Lewis, a well known and prestigious man in the mid-1800s in Tangi Parish & in the state of Louisiana. One of his grandsons, Arthur Cullen (A C)Lewis, became a well known and wealthy real estate owner in the Baton Rouge area, owning the Bellemont Motel, the Oak Manor Motel, the Continental Motel and numerous rental units. He built a fine mansion south of Baton Rouge in the 1970s and the movie, the Toy, staring Richard Pryor was filmed there.
